This guide covers a careful home routine for a manual-defrost freezer or fridge-freezer compartment. It does not apply to every appliance design, so confirm the manufacturer's instructions first.
Before you begin
Plan the job before switching off the appliance. You will need somewhere appropriate to keep frozen food cold, absorbent towels, a low container when the appliance has a drain, a soft cloth and any tool specifically permitted by the appliance manufacturer.
Do not begin while food is still exposed inside the compartment. Keep children and pets away from meltwater, loose ice and cleaning products.
How to defrost a freezer step by step
1. Read the appliance instructions
Check whether the freezer has a defrost programme, drain, removable shelves or model-specific warnings. If it is a frost-free appliance with an unusual ice build-up, the issue may need diagnosis rather than routine manual defrosting.
2. Switch off and unplug
Turn the appliance off and disconnect it from power according to the manual. Keep the door open only as instructed. Do not spray liquid near lights, vents, sensors, switches or other electrical parts.
3. Remove and protect the food
Transfer food to an appropriate cooler or another working freezer. Do not rely on guesswork about whether partially thawed food is safe; follow local food-safety guidance and the storage instructions for each item.
4. Prepare for meltwater
Place towels or a suitable liner in front of the freezer. Use the appliance drain when one is provided and follow the manual for its position and operation. Replace wet towels before water can spread across the floor.
5. Let the frost soften
Allowing ice to melt naturally is the simplest approach. Never attack hard ice with a knife, screwdriver or sharp metal tool. A punctured liner or damaged cooling component can turn routine maintenance into a costly repair.
If the manual permits assistance, use only the method and tools it recommends. Do not improvise with electrical heaters, open flames or direct heat.
6. Remove loose ice carefully
Once the frost has softened, lift away loose sections carefully using a suitable plastic scraper when permitted. Stop if the ice does not release without force.
7. Wipe, clean and dry
Absorb the remaining water and clean the interior with a method approved for the appliance. Dry the compartment, shelves, drawers and door seals fully. Check that no water remains near openings or electrical areas.
8. Restart and reload
Reconnect the appliance and allow it to return to its correct operating temperature before replacing food. The time and temperature requirements depend on the model, so follow the appliance display and manual.
