Can Diamond Rings Be Cleaned in an Ultrasonic Cleaner?

Some diamond rings can be cleaned ultrasonically, but not every diamond ring is suitable. The diamond, its treatments, the metal, the setting and the ring’s condition must all be considered.

Why many diamonds tolerate ultrasonic cleaning

Untreated diamonds are hard and non-porous. A well-made ring with a secure setting may therefore be compatible when the jeweller or manufacturer permits ultrasonic cleaning. The machine can help loosen oil and residue around the underside of the stone, where a cloth may not reach.

When a diamond ring should stay out

• A stone moves, clicks or appears uneven in its setting.
• A prong is bent, thin or broken.
• The diamond is fracture-filled or has another treatment affected by heat, liquid or vibration.
• The ring contains additional porous or fragile gemstones.
• The setting uses adhesive, or the ring is antique, repaired or visibly damaged.

Inspect the setting—not only the stone

Settings are often the weakest point. Examine every prong, bezel edge and small accent stone in good light. Pavé and cluster settings contain many small components, so professional inspection is wise when anything is uncertain.

A safer cleaning routine

1. Confirm compatibility with the seller or jeweller.
2. Use clean water or only an approved solution.
3. Keep the ring separate from other items.
4. Run the recommended cycle only.
5. Dry it carefully and inspect the setting again.
